The African Christian Democratic Party in the Western Cape has welcomed the interventions by the City of Cape Town, to bring stricter laws into effect concerning speedsters.

ACDP Provincial Leader Ferlon Christians said this will curtail speeding motorists from using roads as their personal race attack.

There have been countless incidences of horrific crashes which have taken place on the province’s roads, especially in Mitchell’s Plain, where a 21 year old dragged an officer last year.

Christians said we are encouraged by this move because the law will give traffic officials the help they need in order to prevent these deaths on the road. We cannot have these number of deaths on the road and we as ACDP welcome the call by the City that will curtail motorists.

Meanwhile the City of Cape Town has condemned the terrible examples of reckless and negligent behaviour of drag racing.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said they have asked MEC of Transport Donald Grant to make sure that they impound these vehicles who engage in an illegal drag racing.

Smith said the City is busy engaging the Provincial Government about getting tougher laws in place when they promulgate their provincial traffic act regulations in terms of that act in April this year and that we potentially able to confiscate vehicles where drag racers make themselves guilty of this behaviour.

“We going as far as engaging with the National Prosecuting Authority around one particular case in order to protect the lives of innocent people who get killed by these activities” Smith added.
